Older city buildings get pricey makeovers

Lisa Gustavsen and her husband, John Moore, have big plans for the three-family house she owns next door to their Union Street home. They intend to spend several hundred thousand dollars to transform the building's three longtime rental units into luxury condos - with prices that will rival those of entire houses nearby.

The work at 25 Union St. will begin in the spring and, if all goes well, will wrap up in September 2005, Moore said. Gustavsen and Moore, who hope to ask $475,000, $450,000 and $250,000 for the units, say they're confident there's a market out there for the kind of high-end condominiums they're planning - especially since their neighborhood is within walking distance of such downtown attractions as the Calvin Theater and Thornes Marketplace.
